How to Build a Study Routine That Works: What the Research Says

The most effective study routine, according to the research, is short and repetitive: twenty to forty minutes of focused work on most days, one subject per session, each session starting with the student recalling what they covered last time. A major review in Psychological Science in the Public Interest rated this approach, known as distributed practice, the most effective study technique available to students of almost any age, while the two techniques students actually use most, highlighting and re-reading, rated among the least effective. University College London research puts the average time for a daily habit to become automatic at 66 days, so a routine started early in Term 3 is running on autopilot by the time end-of-year exams arrive.

Why is a study routine better than cramming?

Cramming feels productive because it produces familiarity with the page. The problem is that familiarity fades within days, while spaced study builds memory that survives to exam day and beyond.

The spacing effect is one of the oldest and most replicated findings in memory research, and it now shapes official teaching guidance in Australia. The Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO), the Commonwealth’s independent evidence body for education, explains the mechanism in its spacing and retrieval practice guide: each return to the material interrupts forgetting and strengthens the memory, and each act of recalling it from memory, rather than looking it up again, makes it easier to retrieve next time.

In the Kent State review mentioned above, John Dunlosky and his colleagues assessed ten common study techniques against hundreds of published studies. Distributed practice earned the strongest rating across ages and ability levels. Highlighting, the technique found in every pencil case in the country, sat near the bottom of the list.

How long does it take to form a study habit?

On average, 66 days. Health psychologist Phillippa Lally and her team at University College London tracked 96 volunteers as each tied one new daily behaviour to an existing cue, such as after breakfast. Their study in the European Journal of Social Psychology found the behaviour became automatic after anywhere from 18 to 254 days, with 66 the average, and that missing a single day made no measurable difference to whether the habit formed.

For families the practical lessons are simple. Tie the study block to something that already happens every day, because the cue then does the remembering. Expect the routine to need most of a term before it feels natural. And treat a missed day as nothing, because according to the data it is nothing. The routines that fail are the ones abandoned in week two, not the ones that skip the odd chaotic Tuesday.

What does a good study routine look like for school students?

A workable Term 3 version, built directly from the evidence above:

1. Pick the anchor. Home from school, snack, then the study block at the same desk or table. Same cue every day. 2. Keep sessions short. Around twenty minutes for primary students and up to forty for secondary students, with one subject per session so attention is not split. 3. Start with recall. Two minutes of answering “what do I remember from last time?” before the books open. Recalling strengthens memory in a way re-reading cannot. 4. Finish properly. Note where the session ended and write down tomorrow’s starting point, so the next session begins with momentum. 5. Miss a day without guilt. One missed day changes nothing. Quitting in week two changes everything.

When should parents consider a tutor?

A routine is the foundation, but some situations need more. A subject that has slipped too far for home study to recover, a student who works better when someone outside the family is expecting the work, or a Year 11 or 12 student facing exams that reward structured preparation above everything else.
